Mushrooms Are All the Same, It’s Just About the Dose

Mushrooms Are All the Same, It’s Just About the Dose

“Mushroom” is a broad label. What sits underneath it can be chemically and biologically very different.

Psilocybin mushrooms or Functional mushrooms may belong to the same fungal kingdom, but they contain different compounds and are studied for very different reasons. Even among psilocybin mushrooms, chemistry can vary from one strain to another.

Are all mushrooms the same? That sounds simple, but mushrooms don’t work that way.

Dose matters, but it is only part of the picture. The species determines the chemistry you are starting with, and those compounds can interact with the body in very different ways.

Species Comes Before Dose

Start with psilocybin-containing mushrooms.

Psilocybin is a serotonergic psychedelic, and its activity is closely tied to serotonin receptors in the brain, especially the 5-HT2A receptor.

A 2004. double-blind, placebo-controlled study from University Hospital Zürich tested increasing doses of psilocybin in healthy volunteers and found dose-dependent changes in altered states of consciousness, attention, and mood.

The important part is that changing the dose changes exposure to compounds the mushroom already contains. It does not turn one species into another.

Even Within the Same Species, There Are Differences

Names like Golden Teacher and Penis Envy make this conversation a little more interesting. Both are commonly recognized as cultivars of Psilocybe cubensis, which means they belong to the same species. But that does not make every P. cubensis mushroom chemically identical.

Laboratory research from 2026 has found large differences in tryptamine concentrations among P. cubensis strains, even when they were grown and analyzed under the same conditions. The researchers also found variation between mushrooms from the same strain.

That is the biological side of the story. Within a sacramental context, psilocybin mushrooms may also be approached as medicine through intention, contemplation, prayer, or spiritual practice. Science can describe how psilocybin interacts with the brain, but it cannot define the personal or spiritual meaning someone may find in the experience.

Functional Mushrooms Tell a Different Story

Lion’s Mane gives us a useful comparison.

Human research on Lion’s Mane is asking a completely different set of questions. In a 2023 double-blind pilot study from Northumbria University, 41 healthy adults took Lion’s Mane or placebo. Researchers found that participants performed faster on one cognitive task after a single dose, while many other measures showed no clear differences.

That trial was not looking at altered states or psychedelic experience. Researchers were studying cognition, stress, and mood.

Cordyceps brings in another direction entirely.

A 2010 double-blind, placebo-controlled trial from UCLA followed 20 healthy older adults using a Cordyceps sinensis preparation for 12 weeks. Researchers found changes in metabolic and ventilatory thresholds during exercise, while VO2 max did not change.

Lion’s Mane is being studied for its effects on cognition and the nervous system. Cordyceps has been studied for its effects on exercise physiology and energy metabolism. Psilocybin research focuses on another set of pathways and experiences altogether.

Even mushrooms grouped under the “functional” label are not interchangeable. Their chemistry, biological pathways, and research questions can look very different.

Dose Still Matters

Of course it does.

An intentional relationship with the medicine may strongly influence intensity. More broadly, changing the amount of any mushroom changes how much of its compounds the body encounters.

But dose cannot erase species.

The same amount of one mushroom is not simply a stronger or weaker version of another. Before asking “how much?”, there is another question worth asking first:

Which mushroom?

Understanding that difference is part of approaching mushrooms with greater awareness, care, and respect.

Join the conversation: which mushrooms have you heard people talk about as if they were basically the same?
