The Subtleties of Microdosing and Macrodosing

Microdosing vs Macrodosing: The Whisper and the Roar

Psychedelics have found themselves in the cultural spotlight once again, but much of the conversation has become centered on dosage.

Should you microdose?

Should you macrodose?

Which is better?

Perhaps a more nuanced question is this:

What kind of relationship are you seeking with the medicine?

When we talk about microdosing vs macrodosing psilocybin, the two are often presented as opposite ends of a spectrum. While that is technically true in terms of dosage, they are perhaps better understood as two entirely different conversations with the same teacher.

If you’re curious about where these experiences fall numerically, our Psilocybin Dosage Guide explores the spectrum from microdoses through full psychedelic doses in greater detail.

But numbers only tell part of the story.

One speaks in whispers.

The other has the capacity to completely rearrange your understanding of reality.

Microdosing Psilocybin: The Whisper

Psychologist and psychedelic researcher James Fadiman helped introduce microdosing into mainstream awareness through participant reports collected over many years.

What fascinated Fadiman wasn’t that people were having mystical experiences.

It was that many weren’t.

Instead, people described subtle changes in everyday life: feeling a little more patient, more engaged in creative work, less reactive during stressful conversations, or more present in their relationships.

More willing to take a walk, start a painting, or finally write the page they had been avoiding.

Nothing spectacular, per se.

Yet sometimes those subtle shifts become the foundation upon which an entirely different life is built.

Microdosing isn’t necessarily about changing consciousness. It may be better understood as changing your relationship to ordinary consciousness.

The medicine doesn’t demand your attention. It invites a different texture of presence.

This quieter relationship with mushrooms can extend beyond productivity or mood, too. As we’ve explored in our piece on microdosing for spiritual work, subtle experiences can also become part of practices centered on presence, ritual, introspection, and connection.

Research into microdosing remains in its early stages, and the evidence is mixed. Observational studies and personal reports have described benefits, while placebo-controlled research has raised important questions about how much expectancy contributes to those outcomes.

Rather than diminishing the practice, I think this reminds us that our experiences are rarely explained by a single variable.

Our biology, psychology, expectations, environment, intentions, and daily habits all participate in the outcome.

Macrodosing Psilocybin: The Roar

Then there is the path championed by the late and great Terence McKenna.

McKenna was famously skeptical of reducing psychedelics to tools for productivity or self-improvement. He encouraged explorers to venture into what he called the “heroic dose” because he believed sufficiently deep psychedelic experiences could dissolve the ordinary structures through which we perceive ourselves and reality.

One of his most enduring ideas was:

“Nature loves courage.”

McKenna wasn’t speaking about recklessness.

He was pointing toward the courage required to surrender certainty.

To enter experiences without knowing what waits on the other side.

A practice that feels increasingly foreign in a culture centered around structure, routine, and predictability.

A full-dose psychedelic journey can challenge assumptions that have quietly governed our lives for decades.

Who am I without this identity?

What remains when control disappears?

What have I mistaken for truth simply because it was familiar?

Sometimes the answers arrive as breathtaking beauty.

Sometimes they arrive as grief.

Sometimes they arrive as silence.

Clinical research into full-dose psilocybin has produced promising findings in controlled therapeutic settings, including research involving depression, anxiety, addiction, and existential distress. Importantly, these outcomes are generally studied alongside preparation and psychological support, rather than treating the psychedelic experience as a standalone intervention.

And dosage alone doesn’t determine what happens. Our guide to what to expect from 1 g, 2 g, and 3 g psilocybin journeys explores how mindset, environment, support, and integration can shape an experience just as meaningfully as the number on the scale.

A powerful journey alone is not the transformation.

It is the invitation.

Microdosing vs Macrodosing: The Difference Isn’t Just Size

It can be tempting to think of microdosing as “small” and macrodosing as “big.”

But perhaps that’s the wrong distinction.

Microdosing asks:

“How do I become more myself?”

Macrodosing often asks:

“Who is this self I believe myself to be?”

One may deepen and clarify awareness within everyday life.

The other may temporarily dissolve the very framework through which everyday life is experienced.

Neither is inherently superior.

(Although, to be honest, if I had to pick… macrodoses all day.)

There are seasons in life that call for gentle tending.

There are seasons that call for complete surrender.

Wisdom lies in discerning which season you’re in.

Psychedelics Beyond Optimization

One concern I have held as psychedelics become increasingly mainstream is the risk that they will simply be absorbed into our culture of optimization.

We see versions of this happening already:

Take this dose.

Increase your productivity.

Improve your creativity.

Become a better entrepreneur.

Sure, better functionality can be a welcome outcome.

But as a psychedelic activist, I will die on a hill if needed shouting that these entheogens and compounds have historically occupied a much larger role than helping us answer more emails or perform more efficiently.

These medicines were not put here for better productivity. They were put here to remind us of what is real and sacred.

Long before microdosing became associated with productivity and Silicon Valley, psychedelic mushrooms held ceremonial, spiritual, and medicinal significance in Indigenous cultures. Our exploration of the history of psilocybin use in Indigenous cultures offers more context for that relationship.

Across traditions, psychoactive plants and fungi have been approached not merely as tools for individual performance, but within broader relationships involving spirituality, healing, ceremony, community, and the natural world.

I’m not saying productivity, creativity, or functionality aren’t important or fabulous side effects.

But I do believe the times we find ourselves existing in are requiring us to dig a little bit deeper.

Microdose or Macrodose? Final Reflections

I don’t believe microdosing and macrodosing are competing philosophies.

I believe they are complementary expressions of the same mystery.

Both deserve respect.

Both require discernment.

And both ultimately point back toward the same place.

The question may not be whether you should microdose or macrodose.

Perhaps the better question remains the one we began with:

What kind of relationship are you seeking with the medicine?
