Microdosing with Golden Teachers

Microdosing Golden Teachers has quietly become one of the most rewarding practices in my life.

My Story with Golden Teachers

Of all the mushroom strains I’ve encountered, Golden Teachers hold a particularly special place in my heart. They were among the first mushrooms I ever journeyed with, and over the years they’ve accompanied me through some of my most profound experiences.

I’ve watched time seem to stop, witnessed holographic landscapes unfold before me, felt the borders between realms dissolve into sacred geometry, and received deep soul guidance while working with this beautiful strain.

Whether these experiences arose from the mushrooms themselves, the set and setting, or the mysterious interplay between the two, Golden Teachers have consistently met me with a sense of wisdom, warmth, and gentleness, hence the name.

The Penis Envy Problem

When I entered the world of microdosing, however, I noticed something interesting. The vast majority of microdosing products seemed to be made with the Penis Envy (PE) strain. From a potency standpoint, it makes perfect sense. Penis Envy is widely recognized as one of the most potent Psilocybe cubensis varieties, often containing significantly more psilocybin per gram than Golden Teachers. For many people, this means a very effective microdose can be achieved with a smaller amount of mushroom material.

For me, though, it was a different story.

Even after years of working with mushrooms in ceremonial and therapeutic settings, I discovered that I am surprisingly sensitive to PE. More times than I can count, what was intended to be a functional, sub-perceptual microdose left me feeling overwhelmed. Instead of quietly enhancing my day, I experienced a noticeable come-up, a heavy body load, and a nervous system that felt overstimulated rather than supported. Rather than helping me become more productive, present, or creative, I often found myself wanting to lie down until the intensity passed.

Unfortunately, those experiences discouraged me from microdosing altogether for quite some time.

Rediscovering Microdosing with Golden Teachers

Then one day, a simple thought occurred to me.

Enter stage left: Golden Teacher heroes.

Golden Teachers generally contain considerably less psilocybin per gram than Penis Envy often around half as much on average, though potency varies greatly from grow to grow. I wondered whether that difference might create an entirely different microdosing experience for someone with my sensitivity.

So I decided to experiment.

The difference was almost immediate.

For the first time in a long time, microdosing Golden Teachers gave me what I had always imagined a microdose was supposed to feel like. There was no noticeable come-up. No heaviness in my body. No feeling that I needed to “manage” the experience. Instead, there was simply a quiet enhancement of my day, which is what one hopes for in the microdosing experience.

I found myself moving through daily tasks with greater ease and presence. My meditation practice deepened without effort. Yoga became more embodied and intuitive. Conversations felt a little more spacious. Creative ideas flowed more naturally, and I noticed an increased appreciation for simple moments that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.

Rather than feeling altered, I felt more like myself.

Of course, everyone’s relationship with mushrooms is unique. My partner, along with many of my friends, actually prefers microdosing with Penis Envy and finds it perfectly balanced for their nervous systems. This is an important reminder that there is no universally “best” strain. Our physiology, sensitivity, metabolism, mindset, and even what season of life we’re in can all influence how we respond.
What this experience taught me is that successful microdosing isn’t necessarily about choosing the strongest mushroom rather choosing the mushroom and the dose that best supports your individual nervous system.

Sometimes less truly is more.

If you’ve tried microdosing before and found yourself feeling anxious, overstimulated, or simply too deep in the medicine for your liking, it may not mean that microdosing isn’t for you. It may mean instead that the strain, potency, or dose wasn’t the right fit. Exploring a gentler option like Golden Teachers or reducing your dose even further may create an entirely different experience.

For me, Golden Teachers have once again lived up to their name. I have always said that Mushrooms have been my favorite teachers in life. I can add to this now by giving Goldens the MVT awards in my book.

Note: This article reflects one person’s personal experience with microdosing and is not intended as medical advice. Everyone’s response to psilocybin varies. Consult a qualified healthcare provider before beginning any microdosing practice, especially if you have a personal or family history of mental health conditions.
